Doctor Visit

This past week I made a trip to Sacramento again with my kiddos in tow!  I was glad to be able to leave the three other kids with my sister-in-law for a quiet place that they could work on their school work while I went to the genetics department of UC Davis!!  This was the appointment we had waited for all summer!!

We met with a genetic counselor which was interesting!  She was a very caring lady who teared up as I retold Little Bear's whole story, from events that happened to him before going to the orphanage to him coming in our home to the present day and all we have faced with him!  I had looked through notes from the counseling session the orphanage directors put in place for the birth mother and all the caretakers because of our rocky journey in getting him home!  I told her how the nanny's at the orphanage retold of how malnourished he was and they fed him and fed him but could not get him to gain weight!!

Anyway, the genetics doctor came in our room and said Bereket's name and actually pronounced it right with the rolling "r" and we liked him right off the bat!!  He was super good with Bear and he appeared to be from the Middle East!  His language was clear though, because I did have some initial concern that I wouldn't be able to understand him!!  We talked over his case and the fact the Bereket has been founded  to have "wormian bones" in his skull which is common for people with OI.  As the doctor physically looked at Little Bear, he kept saying, "very typical, very typical!"  After all, he sees these kinds of patients frequently!!  My heart sank a bit more and more and he kept on and then said, "He probably has type 1 or type 4!"  This is before we went to the lab for his DNA test which will determine for sure his diagnosis but all the doctors we have seen so far think it is very likely he does indeed have OI, so it just made it a little more real for me!!  After the appointment we went to the lab for his DNA test.  His results could take up to 1 month!  In the meantime we are still waiting, but a bit closer to a diagnosis.....

Bereket didn't want to leave the waiting room because there were so many fun things to do!

It was Autumn's birthday and Coleen surprised her by not telling her the kids were visiting!

How fun to get in on a birthday party!!
