Kitchen Project

As I saw the end of our summer rapidly approaching, I knew my time would be soon split in so many ways....  maybe that was why I starting ripping my kitchen apart?!!  I don't know, but it's not really that I needed more to do...  I suppose to be utterly honest, my kitchen cabinets have been bothering me for quite some time!!  They were sticky and the around most the the handles I was seeing nail marks!!  UGH!!  As much as I tried to ignore it, I knew eventually I would have to remedy it!!  Well, in my dreams that was going to be when I got the kitchen of my dreams and a whole remodel!!

Then, reality struck (thank goodness... or not?!!) and I realized school was going to be starting again and life was going to be crazy again and then also the fact that my dream kitchen was not going to be happening in the near future....... so I took matters in my own hands!!  I was not wanting to see the hubby's reaction when he witnessed the torn apart kitchen when he came home from work a couple of weeks ago!!  I do believe I have helped him to be unalarmed!!!  HA!!  Let's just say he managed his surprise well!!  That is considering the last time the kitchen was torn apart!!  I told myself this time I was going into it with a different mentality... I would just deal with a torn apart kitchen for as long as it takes to get it back together while taking time to do it right!!  HA!  I also found that there were other things on my agenda and that having my kitchen torn apart would not be helpful or relaxing!!

So, with much time and effort and even many late nights (hey, what can I say, the family is in bed and the kitchen is quiet for one time of the day!!!) I have made great progress!!  I can't even say that I had a plan from the beginning, I just knew things had to change!!!  My distressed barn red cupboards just had to go!

I started by sanding down the existing cupboards!

Then was the decision making time for whether to keep or let the
wall paper go!!  I decided even if wall paper isn't "in" right now,
I still like my trim!!!

I hated the formica that went up on my backsplash, so I started tearing that off!!

I found a lot of glue underneath

Once I had that cleaned up and sanded as best as I could,
then I put primer on it!!  I then decided to paint it with a good
coverage paint that I had from the Living Room!

Next, I put my first layer of Annie Sloan French Linen
chalk paint on my open shelving and bottom layer of cabinets
so I could get a two layer look!

The first layer looked kinda scary!!!

These were my cupboards... just old well painted red barn flat look!

With the help of my carpenter savvy hubby, we
created paneling
for our cupboards without spending a penny!

I started with painting the backsplash and then kept
going around the kitchen to match it!!  I was happy for a lighter color!!

Then, time to start chalk painting my cabinet space!!

The first coat....It  is Old White by Annie Sloan

After filling holes, sanding, I was ready to put my first
 coat on these babies!!

I did the french linen for the first coat because
 I wanted a 2 layer look!

The end is in view as the beginning of school approaches!!!  Stay tuned!!  :)
